If your car uses any kind of synthetic suede-like microfiber fabrics like Dinamica or Alcantara then you may be familiar with it wearing poorly over time like on this steering wheel. Today, I’ll show you how you can quickly and easily revive and renew the look and feel of your Dinamica or Alcantara steering wheel. Note too that these fabrics are also used for other automotive applications like shifters, headliners, dashboards, consoles, doors and seats which can be similarly renewed using this method. Also use this method for other items like the Microsoft Surface tablet/laptop, Gaming racing wheels and more!

Dinamica and Alcantara are just 2 different brands of the same thing… A durable synthetic microfiber fabric that’s used in more and more applications nowadays in place of real leather or suede. It used to be found in high-end cars but is now making its way into common daily drivers as well.
Over time, the soft, supple feel of these materials are lost and it can become smooth, ugly and hard to the touch. If not maintained properly, look how bad it could end up. In the case of this steering wheel, this happens from daily gripping with hands that could be dry, clean, dirty or just have oils from your skin. Then add the UV and heat from the sun and you get an terrible looking steering wheel.
Read on to see how bad it can get and how this faux microsuede can easily be cleaned, renewed and restored to as new condition demoed on a Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG sport steering wheel.
Preventative maintenance makes all the difference so follow this regular cleaning/maintenance care process and your Alcantara/Dinamica will look great and last the best it can!
Aside from the regular maintenance, this is another reason to get UV blocking window tint and to use a sunshade if parking outside regularly.
Let’s get started.
Step 1 - Wet
First, use a damp microfiber cloth and wipe the Dinamica. This will start to moisten the fabric and the dirt and oils on it. Use a light and gentle rubbing motion being careful around the edges as these areas are more sensitive to wear. For the inner part of the wheel and for where your fingers grip around, it’s easier if you wrap the cloth around the steering wheel as you are gripping it like you are gripping a bike handlebar, then continue rotating and wiping the surface.
NOTE: For each step a new/different microfiber cloth should be used.
Step 2 - Cleanse
Next, I like to use a leather cleaner like Autoglym Leather Cleaner to dissolve the dirt and oil on the Dinamica/Alcantara.
Make sure to follow the instructions for the cleaner you use.
You can use what you want but this is my favorite. If it’s good enough for leather then it’ll be good enough for this. Plus it has specialized cleaning agents that have a neutral pH formulation that also deodorizes. Spray some cleaner onto the microfiber cloth and work up a light lather and continue to likely rub the surface to work the cleaner into the fibers. The light rubbing along with the moisture is lifting the microfibers in the Dinamica and bringing the material back to life. And look… you might as well clean the rest of the steering wheel too.
As you can see, the Dinamica is starting to look like new again.
Step 3 - Rinse
Next, get a new microfiber cloth and wet it with water. Wipe like before to absorb and remove the remaining leather cleaner from the Dinamica.
Step 4 - Conditioning
The last step is to use some Autoglym Leather Care Balm to condition the Dinamica/Alcantara. I love using this because it has a nice new leather smell to it. At least that’s how I would describe it. Again, use whatever you prefer but make sure to work it into the fabric evenly then let air dry.

That’s all there is to it. It’s so simple and easy that anyone can do this and get great results. Looks, feels and acts like new Dinamica or new Alcantara.
