Blog_DIY_How to turn off Zippo Hand Warmers - Easy step to turn off refillable hand warmers

For those of you that are familiar with these Zippo hand warmers you know how great they are as reliable hand warmers.  But for those that are new to them you may be reluctant or hesitant to buy them because they use lighter fluid and cannot be turned off.  Or at least that’s what we’ve been told.  Even Zippo’s website mentions that “Once ignited there is no safe way to stop the heating action”.  Well, in this video I’m going to show you the easiest and safest way to turn these Zippo refillable hand warmers off.

I’ve tried many hand warmers in the past and these Zippo reusable hand warmers are still one of the best and a favourite for their long lasting, consistent heating and fast refills.  I use them when outdoors in the winter and when travelling to and from work where I have to walk outdoors and also take a train.

One fill and it can last as long as 10 to 12 hours and recharging them is easy and fast in minutes.

If you remember the fire triangle from science class in school, a fire needs 3 things.  Fuel, Oxygen and Heat.  Take one of these away and the fire stops.

Though this hand warmer doesn’t have a flame, the catalytic process that generates the heat still needs Oxygen.  So, if you remove the Oxygen, the chemical reaction stops.

The solution is to use a Ziploc bag like this and put the hand warmer in with the pouch on and seal the bag removing as much air as possible.  It’s as easy as that.  Note that in the pouch, the heat is not enough to melt the bag.  If you want to be safer with the Zippo hand warmer before packing them away, just wait until the Zippo starts to cool down and that’s your indication that it has turned off.

This also works for any other hand warmers that needs Oxygen or air to create the heat.

This method is also a good way to store the hand warmer, ready to use, for longer periods of time.  Out in the open the lighter fluid will evaporate away over time so storing in a bag like this will slow that down.  Using a bag that has 2 zippers is also better but I find that the small ones like this convenient to use.  Keep in mind that over a long enough time, even stored like this, all the fuel will eventually evaporate and escape as these are not 100% air tight.
